For centuries the optical industry reaped the benefits of being a highly specialized industry with a product that is not only wanted but required by many. For a long time, the high markup on eyeglasses was warranted as it required a significant investment of time to make the frame and custom prescription lenses. In the 1900's machinery began to be developed that could assist optical companies with the time concerns but the cost of this diamond-lad equipment was quite the investment therefore high markup was still a necessity for lenses . However, the frames were much easier to make and for much less... yet the price never changed, if anything the prices went up! As technology advanced, so did the machinery and now frames and the custom prescription lenses can be made in minutes using machinery that cost a fraction of what it used to - but why didn't prices go down?
So finally, with the invention of the internet, companies were able to cut-out the middle man and be unrestricted by the geographical boundaries . Plus making the frames and lenses quickly and cost efficiently.
So lower overhead and bigger market = lower prices right? WRONG!
DO NOT BE DECEIVED!
Most online optical companies may offer eyeglasses for a significant amount less than a brick and mortar optical company but they are NOT selling the same eyeglasses! They aren't doing you any favors either - it makes them even more profit. Plus they escape the laws of many states by not requiring Opticians to take measurements. This results in a high returns but when they make millions - who cares? Not them!

Company "X" is a Brick & Mortar Optical that buys or makes quality frames (usually from Italy) then pays locals to cut the lenses. The cost equals about $50-100 but they sell them for $600+/-. They use the profit to pay employees from your neighborhood, they pay their overhead (like building expenses & advertising), then pocket the rest. The VIP's make millions each year and the chairmen make billions each year! (Hint: 500-1,000% mark-up)

The company pays about $3.00/pr. Having minimal expenses to cover they are able to charge just $99 for the eyeglasses. They pocket the difference. VIP's make millions, Chairmen make billions! (Hint: 3,000% mark-up)
Answer: Many of you probably thought "Online Optical Companies are going to be better" or assumed that was what we want you to believe...truth is that neither do what's right and what is in their customers' best interest. Over the last few years, online companies did a great job at making it seem like they were looking out for you while making even more profit than the already ridiculous prices! In fact, many online companies are owned by the brick & mortar companies - but they operate under an independant company name!
